A wise old man once explained to me (unfortunately not on a mountain top) the difference between the person who walks into the party and says “Here I am” and the person who seeks out a familiar face at a party and engages with them saying “There You Are.”
This simple analogy is at the heart of what separates uninspiring, vapid marketing and warm, inspirational, personable communication. “There you are” is all about your customer, putting their needs, cares, thoughts and ambitions first. Tell me about you, tell me about your world, who you are and what you need. This approach to marketing assumes that what’s important to your customer is important to you. In making this connection, you have connected with your customer as an equal, they are part of your world and so your product is part of theirs.
It might be that your product or service is a luxury item, you might be their aspiration but you talk the same language, you are the same tribe, you are on the list. David Olgivey famously said “The consumer is not a moron, she is your wife” and treating customers or prospective customers with respect and as an equal, will pay dividend. A word to the wise, this needs to be genuine – your customers will know if you are putting it on.
